Dr. Iryna Kozynets, formerly of Zhytomyr State University - Department of Ukrainian History, to the Newbrook Library on Saturday, July 12th at 1:30 pm and Monday, July 14th at 10:30 am.
What connection exists between Zhytomyr and Newbrook? I'm glad you asked. October 4th, 1957, saw the Soviet Union launch the Sputnik satellite, marking the commencement of the Great Space Race. The lead inventor and designer of the Sputnik was originally from the village of Zhytomyr. This event is significant to Newbrook because the first North American photograph of the Sputnik was taken at the Newbrook Observatory the morning of October 9th by Scientist Art Griffin.
