Key Responsibilities

Thorhild County is seeking a suitable individual to assist the Agricultural Fieldman in carrying out the following duties:

  • Provide leadership in supervising and guiding the summer staff (roadside mowing, weed monitoring, pest surveys, and roadside herbicide applications).
  • Assist with Agricultural Service Board (ASB) business plans, policy creation, and act as the Agricultural Fieldman when delegated.
  • Assist in the maintenance and compliance of licensed water projects.
  • Assist in the development of a drainage program (records review, prepare data base).
  • Communicate weed and pest issues to landowners/occupants.
  • Assist landowners in the identification of horticultural and crop insects and diseases.
  • Perform insect and disease monitoring, including Grasshopper, Clubroot and Fusarium Head Blight.
  • Assist when needed with the Beaver Control Program. 
  • Operate and maintain equipment per Thorhild County’s Transportation and Safety Manual.
  • Other duties deemed necessary.
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of some post secondary studies in agriculture, environmental science or related field.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Possess an Authorized assistant certificate or Pesticide applicator’s license (would be an asset).
  • Ability to identify noxious weeds and prohibited noxious weeds.
  • Agricultural background would be an asset.
  • Standard First Aid.
  • Physical ability to sit for long periods and to perform a variety of manual tasks (heavy lifting, squatting, bending, twisting and climbing). Duties are carried out in both indoor and outdoor environments, with regular exposure to the elements.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with Q endorsement (or ability to obtain).
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Records Check and Driver’s Abstract.
  • Must participate in a Fitness to Hire Assessment.
Additional Information

The County offers a comprehensive benefit program.  Salary to be determined based on applicant’s level of education and experience. Hourly rate range for this position is $27.46 - $32.93. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm with ½ hour unpaid lunch break (8 hours per day). Current employees of Thorhild County fulfilling the requirements essential to this position shall be considered for this position.
