 Target Sectors & Emerging Industries

Rooted in strength. Growing into the future.

Thorhild County’s economic base offers both stability and potential. These sectors present the strongest immediate and long-term investment opportunities:

  • Agriculture & Agri-Processing
Grains, cattle, and specialty crops thrive in the region, with room for investment in agri-tech, processing, storage, and transportation.
  • Energy Services
The region is active in conventional oil and gas, with growing interest in service firms, logistics support, and alternative energy solutions.
  • Rural Innovation & Remote Business
Affordable land and high-speed internet make Thorhild a viable location for digital entrepreneurs, light industry, and remote service firms.
  • Tourism & Recreation Ventures
Lakes, parks, and year-round outdoor recreation are an untapped opportunity for eco-tourism, cabin rentals, and destination services.

  Commercial & Industrial Land Availability

  Priority Development Areas

Strategically identified, locally supported.

Priority Development Areas
Strategically identified, policy supported.

Thorhild County’s Municipal Development Plan clearly directs growth toward locations that can leverage existing infrastructure, protect agricultural land, and support economic diversification. Priority areas for development include:

  • Highway oriented commercial and industrial corridors, particularly along Highways 63, 28, and 18, intended for commercial services, logistics, light industrial uses, and resource related businesses that benefit from regional and interprovincial access.
  • Hamlet based growth nodes, including Thorhild, Radway, Newbrook, Egremont, and others, where residential, commercial, light industrial, institutional, and recreational development is encouraged to take advantage of existing servicing, reduce infrastructure costs, and strengthen local service centres.
  • Agricultural value added and Agri business areas, where complementary commercial, industrial, and Agri tourism uses are supported when they align with farming operations and avoid fragmentation of high-quality agricultural land.
  • Recreation and tourism development areas, particularly near Long Lake Provincial Park, Halfmoon Lake Park, and reclaimed resource extraction sites, supporting eco-tourism, seasonal accommodation, recreation facilities, and destination-based investment.
  • Resource and energy compatible lands, including areas suitable for sand and gravel extraction, renewable energy projects, and oil and gas related development, with clear guidance to manage environmental impacts and land use compatibility.

  Business Attraction & Support Strategy

We don’t just welcome business, we work with it.

Thorhild County uses a hands-on, collaborative approach to investment attraction. Support services include:

  • One-on-one development navigation and permitting guidance
  • Land use and zoning support for non-standard or emerging uses
  • Ongoing promotion of local business success stories to increase investor confidence
  • Partnerships with provincial and regional agencies for added leverage

If you’re exploring an idea, we’re ready to help you move from concept to construction.
