Residents may have noticed an increase in skunk activity within our hamlets. Skunks are generally active at night and can be attracted to residential areas by accessible food sources and potential denning locations.
Residents can help discourage skunks by keeping garbage and compost securely contained, removing outdoor pet food and food scraps, maintaining yards, and limiting access beneath sheds and other structures. Residents should use caution when closing off potential den sites, as young skunks may be present from early May to mid-August.
If you encounter a skunk, avoid approaching or chasing it and allow the animal space to move away. Residents with concerns or complaints regarding skunks can contact Alberta Fish and Wildlife by calling 310-0000, which will direct the call to the local branch.
